Overview

A facelift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is designed to improve the appearance of the face and neck by reducing sagging skin, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. This procedure can help create a more youthful and refreshed appearance, and boost a person's self-confidence and self-esteem.

During a facelift, the surgeon will make incisions around the hairline and behind the ears, then lift and tighten the underlying muscles and tissues of the face and neck. They will also remove any excess skin and fat, and re-drape the skin over the newly lifted areas to create a smoother and more youthful appearance. The specific technique used for the procedure can vary depending on the individual's goals and concerns, as well as their anatomy and skin quality.

Some common types of facelift techniques include:

Traditional facelift: This involves making incisions around the hairline and ears, and lifting the skin and tissues of the face and neck.

Mini facelift: This is a less invasive option that involves smaller incisions and less extensive tissue manipulation than a traditional facelift.

Mid-face lift: This focuses on lifting the cheeks and under-eye area, and can help improve the appearance of nasolabial folds and under-eye bags.

Thread lift: This uses special sutures to lift and tighten the skin and tissues of the face and neck.

Non-surgical facelift: This involves using injectable fillers, Botox, or other non-invasive treatments to improve the appearance of the face and neck.

Ideal candidate for a Facelift

An ideal candidate for a facelift is typically a person who is generally healthy, has good skin elasticity and is looking to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. The best candidates for this procedure are typically individuals who are in their 40s, 50s, or 60s, although there is no specific age requirement for a facelift.

Some common reasons people choose to undergo a facelift include:

Sagging skin and deep wrinkles: As we age, the skin loses elasticity, causing it to sag and create deep wrinkles around the face and neck.

Loss of facial volume: As we age, we also lose facial fat and muscle tone, which can lead to a hollow, gaunt appearance.

Jowls or a double chin: Sagging skin and tissue can create jowls along the jawline or a double chin.

Overall facial appearance: Some people simply want to improve the overall appearance of their face and neck, and a facelift can help achieve this.

While an ideal candidate for a facelift is generally in good health, there are some medical conditions that may make the procedure less safe, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting disorders, or a history of severe allergic reactions.

Regardless of where you go to get your facelift, it's crucial to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals, concerns, and your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

What should I do Before my Surgery?

The time leading up to your surgery is very important. To get an excellent result from your plastic surgery procedure, there are some checkboxes you'll want to tick leading up to your procedure.

  • Get the lab tests our surgeon instructs, fill out the paperwork we send you, and pay for insurance coverage.

  • STOP SMOKING! WE MEAN IT!  By restricting blood vessels, nicotine decreases the blood flow throughout your body. Plastic surgery is extremely delicate, and your blood vessels play a significant role in the results. If they are restricted, the results are compromised.

  • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.

  • As you prepare for surgery, the healthier the foods you eat, the better. Eating foods that are full of vitamins and minerals and that are excellent sources of fiber will help you heal more quickly after the surgery. Certain foods are also great at increasing or promoting skin elasticity, which will help your skin bounce back after your procedure.

  • Stay hydrated, drinking plenty of water, and staying hydrated before the surgery can help ensure a smoother recovery.

After Surgery

The first night after surgery, you can expect to feel some discomfort, swelling, and bruising around the incision sites and in the face and neck area. Your surgeon may have placed bandages or dressings over your incisions, which will need to be changed periodically. You may also have small drains in place to help remove any excess fluid.

It's important to rest and avoid any strenuous activity for the first few days and to keep your head elevated on pillows to help reduce swelling. You may experience some pain or discomfort, which can be managed with prescription pain medications.

Your surgeon will provide specific instructions on how to care for your incisions, including how to clean and change dressings. You may also be advised to apply ice packs to reduce swelling and bruising.
Our nurses will ensure to follow your surgeon's instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications.

The day after your surgery you will continue to experience some discomfort and swelling around the incision sites and in the face and neck area. At this point, you will have your first control appointment with your surgeon, they will change your dressings or bandages and evaluate your operative sites. They may also remove any drains that were placed during surgery.

You will continue to need plenty of rest and should avoid any strenuous activity, including exercise and heavy lifting. Our nurses will regularly apply ice packs to reduce swelling and bruising.

The first week after your surgery, you will have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon to assess the healing progress and your incisions. You may still experience some swelling and bruising, although these symptoms should begin to subside. Additionally, scar care instructions will also be provided to minimize scarring. Our nurses will continue to take care of you by following all of your surgeon's instructions.

The first month after your surgery, if you are still feeling tired, and a bit sore at this point, don´t worry, it will take a few weeks or months to feel completely like yourself again after surgery. At this time, you can expect to see significant improvements in your appearance as the healing process continues. Swelling and bruising will have decreased, although some residual swelling may still be present.

You may still have some residual numbness or tingling in the treated areas, but this should gradually resolve over time. It is important to follow all post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon and avoid strenuous activities that could disrupt the healing process.

This period is often called the “roller coaster” time period because you will go through mixed emotions of excitement, frustration, and happiness as you come to grips with your new appearance and the overall recovery process.  Almost all patients go through this period of discovery, learning, and healing. You must keep looking forward and realize that over the next several months you will begin to enjoy your new appearance and your dramatic transformation from surgery.

All of this information and more will be discussed with you during your initial consultation with one of our surgeons. If you have any additional questions we will be happy to answer them over a quick phone call, text, or email.
