Overview

Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, not only reduces the size of the breasts but also provides an aesthetic lift and reshaping, leaving your breasts rounder, lighter, and more proportioned to the rest of your body. Reduce the size of larger breasts; whether it is for function, health or confidence. Breast reduction improves general health and comfort, and can be a life-changing procedure.

Breast Reduction involves removing all excess skin, tissue, and fat. The remaining breast tissue is lifted and reshaped, and the nipple and areola are repositioned and centered on the new breast mound. Your surgeon is also able to reduce the size of your areola during this procedure. Sutures are placed in layers, deep within the tissue, in order to support the newly shaped breasts. Finally, bandages will be placed over the incisions.

Ideal candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery achieves the goal of improving functional concerns such as pain and discomfort caused by the weight of your breasts. If you have trouble fitting into clothing or are uncomfortable during physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts, you may want to consider a breast reduction procedure.

What should I do Before my Surgery?

The time leading up to your surgery is very important. To get an excellent result from your plastic surgery procedure, there are some checkboxes you'll want to tick leading up to your procedure.

  • Get the lab tests our surgeon instructs, fill out the paperwork we send you, and pay for insurance coverage.

  • STOP SMOKING! WE MEAN IT!  By restricting blood vessels, nicotine decreases the blood flow throughout your body. Plastic surgery is extremely delicate, and your blood vessels play a significant role in the results. If they are restricted, the results are compromised.

  • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.

  • As you prepare for surgery, the healthier the foods you eat, the better. Eating foods that are full of vitamins and minerals and that are excellent sources of fiber will help you heal more quickly after the surgery.

  • If you drink, please limit your alcohol intake. Please stop drinking altogether 2 weeks prior to surgery.

After Surgery

The first night after surgery, you will experience temporary swelling, bruising, pain, tightness, and numbness in the areas where surgery was performed. The first night is the worst (TRUST US).

After surgery, you will be placed in a surgical bra that must be worn for 6 - 8 weeks except to shower and clean the garment. The pain and discomfort can be controlled with medication. Your surgeon will prescribe antibiotics, anticoagulants, and pain medication for you to take.

The day after your surgery our nurses will help you shower or sponge bathe (depending on how you feel and the procedure you got), and evaluate your dressings and the operation sites. You will have your first control appointment with your surgeon and then you will go back to the hotel. You may feel pulling or stretching in your breast area and that fluid is moving in your breasts. This feeling is normal and will go away over time.

The first week after your surgery, You will have a second control appointment with your doctor on Day 3 and then another on Day 7. If your doctor closed your incisions with removable stitches, the stitches will be taken out in 7 to 14 days.  At this point, you will still be swollen and bruised. Your body is still recovering. Some post-operative patients may notice bruising for several weeks after surgery. It can take anywhere from a week to several weeks to go away completely.  Sun exposure to the bruises can promote darkening of the areas and delay the lightening process. Your breasts may feel firmer and look rounder. Breast reduction may change the normal feeling in your breast. But in time, some feelings may return.

For about 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, or until your doctor says it's okay, avoid lifting anything that would make you strain. This may include heavy grocery bags and milk containers, a heavy briefcase or backpack, cat litter or dog food bags, a vacuum cleaner, or a child. Do not lift anything over your head for 2 to 3 weeks.

We will accompany you to walk each day. Every day we will walk a little more than we did the day before. Walking boosts blood flow and helps prevent pneumonia and constipation.

The first month after your surgery, if you are still feeling tired, and a bit sore at this point, don´t worry, it will take a few weeks or months to feel completely like yourself again after surgery.  Post-operative swelling can last for several months, you should be able to see your full, final results within 3 - 6 months of the procedure. Your incisions should be fully healed but it is possible that the scars will still be red and raised, don´t worry, eventually, they will become flat and fade.

This period is often called the “roller coaster” time period because you will go through mixed emotions of excitement, frustration, and happiness as you come to grips with your new body and the overall recovery process.  Almost all patients go through this period of discovery, learning, and healing. You must keep looking forward and realize that over the next several months you will begin to enjoy your new body and its dramatic transformation from surgery.

All of this information and more will be discussed with you during your initial consultation with one of our surgeons. If you have any additional questions we will be happy to answer them over a quick phone call, text, or email.
